Dr Paul Bell
Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist

Paul is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, trained at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. He has worked in NHS CAMHS teams for the last 10 years, and has held posts in a variety of specialist teams including Adolescent Outreach Services, Services for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ASD), Community CAMHS clinics and Mental Health Services in Secondary Schools and Pupil Referral Units.

Paul is currently employed by the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust as the lead clinician for a CAMHS service in a North London Secondary school, where he provides assessment and treatment for a wide variety of adolescent mental health difficulties, ranging from minor developmental difficulties to complex and enduring mental health problems. He also works at Open Door, a young people’s psychotherapy service in Haringey, where he organizes and supervises mental health clinics in secondary schools. 

Paul is also a clinical supervisor and service supervisor for various trainings in psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic, including the doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and the MA course in Psychological Therapies with Children, Young People and Families.

Paul’s clinical specialism is in work with adolescents and young adults, but Paul is also qualified to work with younger children, having completed training in brief work with children aged 5 and under. Paul has significant experience of working with secondary school aged children, and continues to offer brief, medium and long term therapy to this age group. Paul is also interested in the ways in which child psychotherapists can support parents, particularly around points of developmental change. Paul has specific training in models of therapy that can be used to help parents understand and adapt to changes in their children. 

Paul also has a specific clinical interest in the psychoanalytic understanding of creativity and the treatment of mental health difficulty in young adult artists and musicians. 

Qualifications: BA Philosophy, Kings College London.  MSc Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology, UCL/The Anna Freud Centre.  MProf Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy
